Sunday reading recommendation: "East Germans Were Welcomed to the West with Free Money. Here’s What They Bought After the Berlin Wall Fell." Cover photo by @marktpower and my portraits for Malcolm Jack’s beautifully written story in this week's issue of TIME Magazine. <3 to Natalie Ivis and @maiabooker_ and @magnumphotos Link in bio. . . #Repost @time · · · When the #Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, East Germans began to pour across what had been one of the most secure borders in the world. Were that not all reason enough to feel euphoric, there was free money. Since 1970, East Germans arriving to the Federal Republic of #Germany were paid a grant, initially of 30 deutsche marks (DM) twice a year, later rising to 100 DM once a year. The "welcome money"—equivalent to about $100 today—was intended to help pay for food or travel. No official statistics exist as to exactly how much was claimed in all, but by the time payments were halted on Dec. 29, 1989, it’s estimated that at least 4 billion DM had been paid out in just seven weeks. Each purchase tells its own story. “When I saw the #Barbie on the shelf, you know, that was it," remembers Susan Penquitt, who was just 8 years old. "I don’t remember any other toy in that shop.” The doll now belongs to her 8-year-old daughter Nora. Read more at the link in bio. Photographs by @nannaheitmann—@magnumphotos for

#Repost @time · · · Cin, a Turkish miner, washes #coal dust from his face after a night shift. @nannaheitmann, who made this photograph in December 2017, spent two years photographing in and around the Prosper-Haniel mine in western Bottrop, #Germany. More than 150 years after it opened, the mine was officially closed on Dec. 21, marking the last of Germany's black coal mines. For most Germans, though, there may be little to mourn about the death of an industry whose heyday is now so distant. “My father said his family used to heat with coal, and I couldn’t even imagine it,” Heitmann told TIME. “For the younger generation, if you don’t come from a coal-mining area, it’s like a different country.” Read more, and see more pictures, on TIME.com.
